Timber and Working with Wood Show - 2007

All the cars were loaded up on Wednesday and Thursday before we made our way to the RNA Showground.

All arrived about 8.30am and went about setting up all the tables, lathes and carving benches. Once it was all set up, the lovely items that Lyn and her friends made over the last two months or so, and all the turned items and carvings were positioned. Once we were organised, we explored the timber that was on sale and to pick up a bargain or two.

It was Friday before we knew it. The doors opened and as usual the school children arrived, questionnaires in hand. We helped answer their questions... or a tall story or two... they all seemed happy with our answers. Friday was a busy day and very profitable for the club.

Before we knew it Sunday was here and the show was coming to a close for another year. Sunday is also a day for with timber prices down from Friday as they don't want to take leftovers home. I know I got a bargain or two and also know of a few of you who also got a bargain so lets hope we see some great items from these bargains over the next few months.

A job well done.

Kooralbyn Turn Fest - 2007

Two hundred and eighty people attended this year's Turn Fest which was held at the Kooralbyn Resort near Beaudesert. Over three days from Friday 30 March to Sunday 01 April, four team demonstrations conducted ninety sessions. Areas covered included woodturning, tenturing, carving, cabinet making, pyrography, bowel decoration and embroidery.

Demonstrations hailed from France (one), America (two), New Zealand (one), Queensland (three), Victoria (four) and New South Wales (three). With breakfast at 6am and the last session finishing at 9pm, the days were very full. It was not possible to attend every session. So many participants chose to follow a particular theme. For example, bowel decorating, while others chose to follow certain demontrators (some decided to attend the sessions of overseas demonstators.)

The facilities at Kooralbyn were excellent, with many people commenting on the wonderful food. Although some of the sessions were crowded, plenty of seating was provided. The PA systems worked well and most sessions could be viewed on a television monitor. The quality of the gallery pieces seems to be improving each year. With this year's gallery being possibly the best ever.

As has been the custome each year the demonstrators donated the pieces they made as prizes for the raffle. In all, there were 82 raffle prizes. The procedes of which were donated to prostate cancer research.

The seven Ipsich club members who attended had a great time with most intending to return next year. If you would like to go next year, it is advisable to book early with David Drescher at South East Queensland Wood Turning Supplies - 3808 7005
